If there’s one thing that’s true about the cannabis industry, it’s that it is constantly changing and exciting. The newest development in the industry was the discovery of a new cannabis compound that’s potentially a whopping thirty times stronger than THC.
The cannabis plant is complicated and intricate with more than 150 known cannabinoids, some of the compounds in the plant. THC and CBD are two of the most popular and widely-known cannabinoids but they’re certainly not the only ones.
A team of Italian researchers was recently looking into the phytocannabinoid profile of medical cannabis when they discovered two previously unknown compounds. They are CBDP (cannabidiphorol) and THCP (tetrahydrocannabiphorol). You may notice that these compounds are one letter away from THC and CBD, just with a “P” added on the end.
What does this all mean?
The two new cannabinoids CBDP and THCP are interesting additions to the growing list of known compounds in cannabis plants. The researchers in the study speculated that THCP specifically could explain some of the differences between the effects of various strains of cannabis.
Differences in the effects users experience from using various cannabis strains are generally attributed to the THC content but THCP could make the picture even clearer.
The next step in this research is to determine the exact concentrations of these compounds and how they affect people. It’s possible that THCP could be 30 times more potent than THC but this will not be certain until researchers do more studies.
